Our History Begins

In 1978, Mrs. Gayle Register Bolton founded the LaGrange Troup County Humane Society in memory of her dog, Toastie.  After two long years of tireless efforts to raise the $66,000.00 needed to build the animal shelter, the doors opened on July 1, 1981.  The Callaway Foundation of LaGrange, Georgia provided half of the needed funds, while the remaining funds were graciously donated by several private citizens of the LaGrange area.   This building was located on Aerotron Parkway. In 1998, it was determined that additional space was needed due to continued overcrowding.  Once again, a private citizen and animal lover donated the necessary funds.  As a result of that donation, the Humane Society was able to purchase two utility buildings, one for storing shelter dog and cat food and one for storing the Humane Society’s supplies/equipment.

In addition, this office space and reception area were renovated and enlarged, and a feline wing (affectionately known as the Tiffany Room in memory of the benefactor’s beloved cat) was added, thus allowing the cats to be separated from the dogs.  In March of 1999, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to officially open the Tiffany Room.  The new building continues this tradition.

The LaGrange -Troup County Humane Society continued to grow in the  21st century.  We built a new, modern, and much larger facility, with separate areas for cats/kittens, puppies, dogs, and sick animals. The new facility will serve both the city of LaGrange as well Troup County, Georgia which has a population of approximately 60,000, a land area of 414 square miles, and includes the cities of LaGrange, West Point and Hogansville.

The new Shelter is a 4400 square foot facility on a 5-acre piece of property.  It includes 60 inside and outside pens, four quarantine pens, adoption, education, grooming, and food preparation rooms, and utility space. This new building is a  state-of-the-art facility, including building materials developed to prevent the spread of disease and lessen the odor, and a cleaning system designed to reduce labor.
